Finding Nemo

Pixar struck another home run with their under sea adventure, Finding Nemo. THQ published 2 PC games based on the movie, called Nemo's Underwater World of Fun and Finding Nemo and Markus worked with the developer to create sprite animations and models.

  Tech Notes

  • Markus animated Nemo, Marlin and Dory in Maya to create sprites for the main hub of the game.
  • The moon fish had to swim in a number of different shapes in the game so some efficient way of creating the animation had to be devised. Markus used the idea of spriticles (particle system with animated sprites) to animate the schooling fish swimming in the many shapes they had to form.
  • Because Pixar uses a proprietary file format, rigged models were unavailable to the game developer. The best available from Pixar were incomplete polygon meshes with no UV data, textures or rigs. To create the angler fish, Markus worked from reference photos and concept drawings to complete the angler fish model and create UV data and a texture map. He also rigged the fish with controls for animating the mouth and the lights on the lure and body.
